q&a

Matrimonial and Family

QHow long does it take to get a divorce?

AIt will probably take around 4-6 months assuming that your spouse cooperates. It will take longer if they do not cooperate, or if they defend the divorce, or if they defend the divorce and cross-claim a divorce against you instead. Financial issues will not necessarily be sorted out within this timescale.

QHow much does it cost to get divorced?

AAbout £1,000 including VAT and fees payable to the court.

QI have seen this advertised much cheaper on the internet. Why should I instruct you?

AIf you instruct us then you will have at least one face-to-face meeting with a qualified solicitor with years of experience in this area. You will also have the benefit of our experience, support and advice throughout the whole process. Most internet providers will not give you this service.

QHow long does it take to sort out financial issues as between myself and my spouse?

AAgain, this depends. If you and your spouse are able to reach an agreement, or we are able to negotiate agreement fairly quickly, then this might be resolved within the same timescale as your divorce (i.e. 4-6 months). However, if negotiations are lengthy or breakdown and it is necessary to go through the court process, it can take much longer. If you go through the court process it may take 6-12 months from the time that you make an application to the court for the court to sort out financial issues.

QHow much does it cost for financial issues to be resolved between me and my spouse?

AThis depends entirely upon the amount of work that we have to carry out. Obviously, complicated cases where there are substantial assets which go through the court process are expensive. The majority of cases are however resolved by negotiation. We pride ourselves on giving you clear costs advice and estimates where possible.
